Well if someone fucks off a chance to rehabilitate themselves cos they can't swallow their pride for 5 minutes and play the game then that's their own doing

See my earlier post

There must be an awful lot of people who get onto step 2 and fuck it off sharpish because they're not into any imaginary friend in the sky nonsense.

Only listened to his Recovery - Freedom From Your Addictions audio book. Excellent insight into the way 12 steps works and would highly recommend it to anyone considering giving it a go.

He narrates it himself and is proper funny in parts.

Re: Your Experiences of Alchoholics Anonymous 12 Step Programme
Like self help to some extent if its for you its for you and can work. 2009 I had to go rehab and detox City Roads. The detox I needed and was life changing experience. Google City Roads Islington , closed now yet was best detox programme in the country , free with self referral and only 18 beds. I waited anxiously for 3 days and got a bed that literally changed my life big time for the better. Rehab they wanted me to stay a year but the regime was strict and due to previous I could only have a South London rehab where most bods in there were for the wrong reasons , mainly to get out of jail or courts , a fresh start by the coast is what I had hoped. Rehab lasted a week. Realised only you*the individual*the alcoholic or drug abuser only oneself can make the change. Choice.Choose to continue, choose to stop, choose to moderate only one person can make that choice. Everything else is an aid-support and what works for some does not work for others like diets. So best thing is to get the AA book(bible) give it a go. Best for me was NLP Neuro-linguistic programming , just changing how my greedy fucked up brain worked and change my thinking. Not being the smartest got a simple book on NLP then got deeper into it, stopped all the bad shit and got good things out of it.

All the best.

I used to drink to hide anxiety. Made it worse.

Brand's spirituality ramblings are quite fascinating.

Meditation has certainly helped me, not so much about the spirituality side of things but more so how to recognise my thoughts and feelings a lot more.

I do find spirituality very interesting though. Not specifically about god but the "higher power" part and laws of attraction n all that.

MiM,

It depends on how much time is given to interpreting the Higher Power element is given by your local group.

mine was 'It's God as per AA founders teachings which is not helpful I have since read that it much more rounded and secular interpretations that might have worked better for me and allowed to remain in the group.

I also saw people who had replaced one addiction with another (One that put them on a better path but didn't let them grow as a person)

People like to shit on the "spirituality" or whatever of the methods often mocking the supposed gullibility of its adherents but it does often seem to work, and if it works who gives a shit what some nitpicky naysayers think.

See the results, don't quibble over the methodology.

Russell Brand has done and been on a few podcasts discussing it, can be quite interesting stuff if you fancy a look.

I had a mate who was a drummer who had to have a brandy to get out of bed in the morning. He was a great drummer though.

Surely what defines an alcoholic is being unable to get through a day without needing a drink. There are people who although drink a lot don't actually need to.

When you start needing a drink before leaving the house you know things are bad.

I heard that the success rate for 12 step programmes were the same as for those where people try to quit by themselves. Most relapse, some quit for good, but whatever you do, it seems it’s down to you yourself more than anything else.
